What do you need before you begin? The best way to get the following supplies is go on your local classified ad website and find used equipment. We home brewers take great care in cleaning and sanitizing, you will not have to worry about germs and bacteria!
Five Liter Carboy
Bung and Air Lock
Siphon, tubing and, and a bottle filler
Bottles and caps (I prefer swing top bottles for the ease of capping)
Large stew pot
Hydrometer (Optional, but the most fun part)
Wine Thief (Needed only with Hydrometer)
All of these items (minus the sanitizer) you can get on your local classified ad site. Some, though, I suggest getting new from your local home brew shop or amazon, such as primary fermenters. Primary fermenters have a shorter life span than a glass carboy because they are plastic. This makes the primary fermenter susceptible to scratching more easily, which is very bad for sanitation. All the living microbes and germs we try to remove prior to fermentation can hide in these tiny scratches and come out during the brewing process and overpower the yeast (poor babies 🙁 ).
You have your equipment… Now what?
Once all of your equipment has arrived, you need to decide what you are going to make. I suggest an easy beer for the fact it is easy and inexpensive to make.
After deciding, please go to my sanitation post to get an understanding of the importance of this step. (Do not Skip)
Good luck, fellow home brewers! Please let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.
